CVT, DCT or torque converter, what the gearbox tells you about a car
Two cars from the same maker, both listed as automatic, can drive completely differently and cost very different amounts to keep running. The gearbox is usually why, and it is rarely mentioned in a listing.
Almost every used car listing in Singapore says the same thing under transmission. Auto. That single word covers at least three fundamentally different mechanical systems that feel different to drive, wear differently, and cost very different amounts to repair.
Worth knowing which one you are buying.
Torque converter, the traditional automatic
This is what most people picture when they think automatic. A set of fixed gears, with a fluid coupling instead of a clutch connecting the engine to the gearbox.
Because the connection is through fluid rather than metal, it is inherently smooth. There is nothing to grab or judder. It also handles heat and load well, which is why it remains standard on larger and heavier cars.
Feels like. Smooth, slightly soft. A noticeable pause when you floor it as the gearbox decides what to do, then a clean shift.
Holds up well. The most proven of the three. Fluid changes on schedule and these routinely run the life of the car.
Downside. Slightly less efficient than the alternatives, and older units with fewer gears can feel dim-witted. Modern eight speeds have largely fixed that.
Commonly found on. BMW, Mercedes, most larger Japanese saloons and SUVs.
CVT, the continuously variable transmission
A CVT has no fixed gears at all. It uses a belt or chain running between two cone-shaped pulleys that change diameter, giving an infinite range of ratios.
The advantage is that the engine can sit at its most efficient speed regardless of road speed. That is why CVTs dominate small Japanese cars, where fuel economy is the priority.
Feels like. No shift steps. Accelerate hard and the revs climb and hold while speed catches up, which some drivers find odd at first. Many makers now program in fake shift points to make it feel more conventional.
Holds up reasonably, with conditions. Fluid changes matter more here than on any other type, and the fluid is specific to the unit. Skipped changes are the main cause of premature failure. Older or harder-driven units can suffer belt wear.
Downside. Not suited to heavy loads or aggressive driving. Repair usually means replacing the unit rather than fixing it.
Commonly found on. Honda Fit and Civic, Toyota Corolla and Altis, Nissan, most small Japanese hatchbacks.
DCT, the dual clutch
Effectively two manual gearboxes in one housing, each with its own clutch. One handles odd gears, the other even. While you are in third, fourth is already engaged and waiting, so the change is close to instant.
It is the most mechanically efficient of the three and the fastest shifting.
Feels like. Sharp, direct, and quick. At crawling speeds some units hesitate or shunt slightly, because a clutch is physically slipping to get you moving rather than fluid taking up the load.
More demanding. Clutch packs are wear items. Heavy stop-start traffic is the hardest possible use case, and Singapore is full of it. Dry clutch units suffer more than wet clutch ones.
Downside. The most expensive of the three to repair, and the most sensitive to how the previous owner drove.
Commonly found on. Volkswagen and Audi DSG, BMW and Mercedes dual clutch models, Honda Shuttle and Jazz hybrids, Hyundai and Kia turbo models.

What to actually check on a test drive
The gearbox is the second most expensive thing in the car after the engine, and a short drive round the block tells you very little. Two checks take a minute and are worth doing on any automatic.
The cold shift test. With the engine cold and your foot firmly on the brake, shift from Park to Reverse, pause, then to Drive. You are listening for a hard clunk or feeling a delay before it engages. A healthy gearbox takes up smoothly and quickly.
Low speed crawl. Drive slowly in traffic or round a car park at walking pace. On a DCT, some hesitation is normal. Repeated shunting, jerking, or a shudder that does not settle is not.
Beyond that, ask when the transmission fluid was last changed. On a CVT especially, a car with no record of fluid service is carrying a risk that does not show up on a short drive.
How this should affect what you buy
Mostly city driving. A torque converter or CVT will be the easier ownership experience. A DCT works, but it is the type of use it likes least.
Mixed or highway driving. Any of the three is fine. A DCT rewards this kind of use and returns the best economy for the performance.
Buying a hybrid. Check which type it uses, because it varies. Honda's hybrids often pair with a dual clutch, while Toyota's system uses a planetary arrangement that behaves like a CVT and is one of the most durable setups on the road.
Buying Continental. Most will be either a torque converter or a dual clutch, and the difference in long term running cost between the two is real. Worth asking before you commit rather than after.
A listing that says auto is telling you almost nothing. Ask which type, then ask when the fluid was last changed. Two questions, and they tell you more about the next five years of ownership than the mileage does.
